Coffee, cakes, and intelligent conversation

With International Women's Day coming up on Sunday, this was a good week for me to do a talk at the Secret Garden cafe in Otley. I introduced my novel, A House in Micklegate, and talked about some of the key themes: women whose lives were dictated by who their husbands were, widowhood, spinsterhood and sexual violence, asking the question whether these and other experiences are something all women can empathise with, or whether how they are experienced is context-dependent - the context in this case being the historical period the women lived in.
In a great venue, with great cakes to fortify us, we had a fascinating discussion, though I'm not sure we came to any firm conclusions. Readings from the novel were well-received, and many thanks to the intelligent audience who really made the event go.
